J.D. Salinger had a distinctive sense of humor gained from a childhood experience when his father was approach by the FBI; the senior Salinger was a cheese merchant and was being investigated for the fidelity of his cheese–accused of having counterfeit holes in his swiss cheese.
J.D. Salinger saw the world for what it was and pulled no punches. Just as Henry Miller was making the word Fuck into a literary term so too was J.D. Salinger making the pernicious saying of God D-mn into a philosophical statement about where the world was after two world wars.
Many schools throughout the country ban The Catcher in the Rye as they do Henry Miller. In the Talmud-Book of Law in the beginning of the tractate of Passover is written a long explanation of the importance of modesty of speech, but in the end for the sake of clarity and truth it is better to be blunt and explicit.
The Cabala explains how the higher level of human experience is expressed through writing; the highest level of writing is engraving–that which is engraved all the way through is highest of the highest.
