A desperate politician willing to break federal laws to get elected president; or a husband and father trying to protect himself and his family from humiliation of his extramarital affair? John Edwards claims he committed sins but no crimes.
One of the sacrifices performed in the Temple was called Ashom/Sin Offering; and one of these offerings was given by a woman after giving birth – the Cabala explains, The sin relates to Chave/Eve who ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge at the beginning of Creation.
It was not the eating of the fruit that was sinful but after eating and realizing she was going to die as a result, she seduced her husband, Adom, to eat the fruit so he would also die. When asked by God, Why he eat the fruit the man blamed the woman, which was his sin.
Together, the two had to leave the Garden of Eden for betrayal and slander – as a result of their actions death was visited upon the earth and with each birth their sin is passed on to the next generation. The politician exemplifies this betrayal, slander and sin.
Crimes are punished by people, but sins are punished by God; the greatest punishment is embarrassment. The Talmud-Book of Law teaches, better a lifetime of embarrassment in this world than one moment of embarrassment, standing before the Light of God, in the next world.
