Recent discoveries of the first direct evidence of comets bringing water to alien planets is now one step further – the planetary disk around the star TW Hydrae has enough water in it to support thousands of oceans.
Water is made of hydrogen, which is plenty throughout the universe, and oxygen, a rarer atom, that combines with two hydrogen atoms to make water – the building block of life. The Cabala explains, growth is inspired by water that comes from the heavens to the earth.
In Hebrew the word for heaven is Shamiam, which breaks down into two words: Saaw Miyam/Holds Water; Shamiam can also mean Aish/Fire and Miyam/Water. The original division between light and darkness are manifested in the opposites of fire and ice throughout creation.
At the end of the three weeks of holidays celebrating the New Year is the day of Shimini Atzerit/ Eighth Gathering when a drop of celestial semen is emitted from the heavens, melted from the heat of our prayers. It is that drop that conceives the coming year.
Water, the miracle of life that makes everything grow, is a metaphor for the Torah; both Torah and water come from a very high place and when drawn down to a low place remain with their precise pure nature – as above so below. God commanded the water to draw to the Earth.
