The African nation of Kenya is attempting to get more than 1 million men between the ages of 15 and 49 circumcised by the end of 2013; if successful, this could be a groundbreaking effort in the fight to curb the spread of HIV.
Circumcision on Jewish men has nothing to do with health; though, there are health benefits, health is not the reason for the commandment to circumcise the male child on the eighth day after birth – but, there is a spiritual reason. Jewish men forgo pleasure for will.
Removing the foreskin dampens the sexual pleasure for both man and woman. The Cabala explains, The level of Keter/Crown that surrounds each part of creation is made from a combination of will, the external representation, and pleasure, the inner representation.
Pleasure is the innermost power – the causation of life, but the by removing the foreskin reveals the corona of the penis – will. The will of the africans in Kenya is to live and circumcision gives them a sixty percent better chance to live and not to die of Aids.
Though the 613 Commandments given to the Jewish People are beyond logic, there are logical ramifications that come from the commandments and are useful to the world. Through this overlap from Torah into the world, Tikun Olam/Fixing the World is accomplished – life not death.
