There is no word in the ancient spiritual languages like Arabic, Hebrew and Sanskrit for religion, a recent addition to spiritual traditions. The world religion means “to link back” which is precisely what religion has done–exploited spiritual knowledge–the father of religion is Rome.
Rome is now encapsulated in the Vatican situated upon many hidden treasures like the Golden Candelabra taken from the Temple as famously portrayed on the Gates of Titus who triumphantly took the light from Israel and brought it to Rome where it was hidden. Rome did not fall Rome morphed into the Holy Roman Church.
Two thousand years ago in Israel windows were formed wide on the outside to gather the sunlight then funneled inward to focus the light; in the Temple the windows were wide within to convey the light to the world as described in the Talmud-Book of Law. The light seen at death is the thread from the soul which animates the body, but the Church has no soul.
The Cabala explains the phrase Tov Maod/Very Good referring to the the creation of death which is very good for the world. As the Church dies many secrets are being revealed.

The Priest had been barred from Public Ministry. In Protestant terms he had in reality been defrocked at that stage for all practical purposes
The quotes (and the news media knows better) are being taken way out of context
The Priest was asking(and indeed asking) for this dispensation to be released from Vow of Celibacy. People can leave the Priesthood but still be under that obligation. That can only be released by the Holy See
Beacuse of the many cases where this happened in the 70's and the granting of the dispensations John Paul the II said there will be no dispensations (the release of vows) until they which the age of 40. That wnet for people that left, people that were barred from public ministry etc etc
In this case a Priest that had made all these vows wanted that obligation removed.
That is the scandal tht Ratzinger is talking about. Priest that a early age leave the Priesthood and then get married. I suppose the Vatican had a radical thought that a child abuser of all people should not move ahead of the rest of the folks who were waiting their turn. In other words they are not going to give a child abuser special consideration to get married. Not very shocking really.
The final removal of a person under Canon law from Cleric to Lay is largely symbolic in these cases with the one real substantive fact that happens is there is now no impediment to marriage.
