Mother’s Day

Minnesota Twins outfielder Denard Span hit a foul ball that struck his mother in the chest during the first inning exhibition game with the Yankees–she was alright but he was unable to continue to play.

It is well known that baseball requires dedication, emotions and mental acuity but mothers trump them all. In the Cabala the left side of the brain is called Mother because she gives birth to the emotions; the right side of the brain is connected to the soul called Chochma/Power of What establishing the right side of the brain as Father seeding the left hemisphere with a spark of the question–what?

It is the left side of the brain that takes the question and through incremental thinking devises an answer that spurs emotions into being; the emotions are considered children derived from meditation and understanding. This relationship between mind and emotions is replicated in the relationship between mother and son.

The breasts of women’s chest are called Shadiam from the word Shadi/Enough because through the baby’s suckling stimulates the mammary gland that delivered the milk to the child. The breasts are also the sign of compassion.

For a grown son to hit his mother in the chest accidently is a game stopping act-what could be more profound? The Torah counts three types of mishaps: those that happen by intention, preventable accident or things that just happen.
