Time magazine has created a stir with its latest cover: an image of a woman breastfeeding her almost-4-year-old son under the headline, Are You MomEnough?
Breasts in Hebrew are called Shadiim from the word Di/Enough, meaning: a child’s suckling stimulates the mammary gland to produce milk so there is always enough. The Torah does not establish a time when breastfeeding must end, nor are the breasts considered indecent.
God’s Name Shadi comes from the act of creation, when God said to the rapidly expanding stars, Enough – thus giving creation a confine. The Name Shadi has the gematria of 415 – the first three numbers of pi; the circle and the line make a union through the endless numbers of pi.
In Cabala, the term Ema/Mother is used to describe the source of creation Bena/Builder and her daughter Shakina/Dwelling is who we feel when we sense God in our presence. Woman are not required to do the positive commandments requiring set times because woman are beyond time.
Children come before these positive commandments thereby exempting women who are the main caregivers of children. The milk of human kindness comes from the breasts of women – the sign of compassion. Men have nipples but no breasts – the sign of compassion lacking kindness.
