THE CABALA OF 15 AV

The 15th of Av is the most mysterious day of the Jewish calendar; considered by the Talmud the greatest festival of the year, when the Daughters of Jerusalem would go dance in the vineyards on the 15th of Av and whoever did not have a wife would go there to find a bride.

The Cabala explains, The full moon of the summer month of Av became a holiday when the people who had been cursed to die within the forty years while the Jewish People wandered in the Wilderness cease to die on the Ninth of Av – after seven days of mourning, came the 15th of Av.

After death came life, girls dancing in Jerusalem enticing the boys to marry and make children – more life; this, the Talmud-Book of Law considers the greatest Jewish holiday – more life. As the last of the five books are being read, God implores us to, Choose life.

There is an interesting parallel to the 15th of Av, where there are no proscriptions as to how to celebrated this day, and sex, that also has no laws of right or wrong. Life is begat through sex whose purpose is to reach the highest level of pleasure, together.

Today is the day of love, beyond law and proscriptions; love gives life – as the Zohar-Book of Secret explains, the more we love God in our path through life, the more God loves us. These two loves are called: Ahavot Olam/Love of World and Ahavot Tinugim/Love of Pleasure.
