THE CABALA OF SMELL

Space may be a near-vacuum, but apparently it has a distinct odor, and now NASA has hired a scent chemist to try to reproduce that characteristic smell.

The Cabala describes smell as being the highest sense of the human body – more than seeing, hearing, tasting and touch. These five distinct attributes used for interacting with our environment corresponds to the five parts of the soul animating the five levels of the body.

The eyes correspond to the head, the ears to the torso and the power of touch are the legs connecting to the earth; will and pleasure correspond to taste and smell working in unison to direct the three outer senses – taste like will is external while smell, like pleasure, is internal.

The two nostrils, separated a by a thin cartilage, is the closest of the extremities: two eyes, two ears, two lips and two hands. The eyes and the ears correspond to the two hemispheres of the brain; the nose represents the third eye, called Dat/Knowing, connects to the soul.

Outer space represents the spiritual world where the soul, big a star, connects to the body through a thin line of light; when this thread of connection is severed, the body dies and the consciousness of the person draws away with the light – a scent evaporating into space.
