When Yoseph was thrown into the pit by his brothers the Torah makes a point of saying the pit was empty and had no water; this extra information provides insight into the phenomenon of emptiness. The Midrash-Book of Metaphor says a pit without water indicates snakes and other noxious animals. The Cabala explains water is Torah and without the Torah/Teaching the destructive forces in the world slither in.
This is true even when water becomes empty of fish, giant jellyfish take their place. Fish in water is synonymous with the angels in heaven since both live in their source; the Talmud-Book of Law teaches that if a fish were to touch a person while submerged in the water it would not interfere with the submersion since the fish is one with the water.
The Torah also can be denuded of life, thats when the big bad jellyfish come in proclaiming religion.
