It says in the Torah that “they got fat and kicked” referring to people who through the excess of wealth became arrogant forgetting and disrespecting the Creator–dispenser of wealth. The Talmud-Book of Law speaks about rabbis who became fat from saying particular prayers with emotion.
Sugar and fat are directly related to pleasure which the Cabala identifies as the source of life; pleasure is the highest power of the person feeding life into the body from the essence of the soul. The soul receives pleasure, the essence of life, from coming close to the Creator.
The physical world is compared to a mirror reflecting light back to the Creator. The mirror works when there is a thin coat of silver is put unto the pane of glass, but when the silver is too thick the light does not reflect but absorbs. Once pleasure enters inside the body if not used for some spiritual-meaningful contribution to society will instead feed sickness in the body.
The word Cesef/Silver also has the meaning of longing; when our longing is for God, pleasure is an aphrodisiac to life.
