The former U.S. President Bill Clinton has launched a new loan program, with $20 million intended to Haitian entrepreneurs to expand their businesses in order to revive the economy of the country.
The Talmud-Book of Law says, the greatest charity is helping another person achieve self-sufficiency, but the economic system America is pandering to the world, built on consumption, is a model for modern-day slavery – helping those at the top remain at the top.
Continuity of power is essential for the stability requirements of the corporations who drive the economy; self-sufficiency is antithetical to the bottom line corporate philosophy. The more efficient the system, the greater the profit; workers become slaves to the system.
The Torah stresses independents; the Midrash-Book of Metaphor says, There are enough jobs in the world for everyone to find a work to love – loving one's work is being free. Rich people are admired for the freedom of life that they enjoy, but money does not make one free.
What is precious in life is people – everything else is secondary. The Cabala, the Jewish mystical tradition, describes the human being as the pinnacle of creation – meant to work the land, living from the sweat of his brow, exercising freedom of choice over his environment.
