In explaining opposites the Cabala utilizes the elements of fire and water that combine through air–the invisible element. Water and fire are opposites in their nature, one going up and the other drawn down–it is air which draws them together to form rain to sustain the earth.
Metaphorically, the wind and the spirit are one–both invisible and both essential for life on earth. The Midrash-Book of Metaphor states the world can not exist without wind. The problem like always is the exploitation of the physical elements without regard to spiritual consequence.
The Zohar-Book of Secret portrays the element of fire and water as two flat planes that come together forming a corner; the corner is consider higher than both planes since the corner has the capacity to meld opposites together without adding or subtracting from the two parts. This invisible force is responsible for the cubic nature of creation.
These two disparate sides between exploitation of nature and recognition of the Creator are constantly bumping into one another without a solution. The Torah/Teaching identifies humility as the invisible attribute which connects opposites.
