The Talmud-Book of Law describes similar practices amongst the Jewish People whose doctors would actually puncture the skin and draw a small amount of blood from different parts of the body effectuating a cure.

The Torah explains the purpose of sickness is to bring the person closer to God through prayer and supplication; modern man has no time for sickness, he has to be at work–the lesson goes unlearned and the world suffers as a result. The Cabala adds, A small hole in the body indicates a large hole in the soul.
The rape of our world plundered by little men trying to be big is a direct result of how we regard sickness. The Midrash–Book of Metaphor tells how King Shlomo wrote a book to cure all illnesses but the Rabbis hid the book because people would stop praying.
