President Obama pardoned Liberty and Peace on Wednesday, the fifth and sixth turkeys to skip the Thanksgiving feast during this administration; an annual ritual that reminds us of our elected officials’ power to decide between life and death.
One of the sacrifices performed in the Temple during the thousand years before the diaspora was called Todah/Thanksgiving; even stranger, the word for turkey in Hebrew is Hodu from the word Todah/Thanksgiving. Yehuda/Jewish comes from the same root meaning, Admit.
Admission is the source of thanksgiving; the first prayer said immediately upon waking is, Modde Ani Lefunecka/I Admit before You – the most important part of admitting is recognition of being before the Creator. Know to whom you are being thankful.
The Cabala explains Hodu/Admitting, as being synonymous with Bitle/Self-nullification; true admitting requires making space within so something else, but you, can be. The sacrifices, as explained in the Cabala, is a method by which one's animal nature can be tamed and directed.
Once during the time of the Temple, a young ox being taken to sacrifice got lose and put his head under the robes of Rebbe who said, Go this is what you were made for; as a result Rebbe suffered many years of sickness until having compassion on mice. Compassion is human.
