The European Organization for Nuclear Research, which runs the massive atom-smashing machine known as the Large Hadron Collider, has inconclusive news regarding the existence of the Higgs Boson, the so-called God Particle whose discovery would explain why stuff has mass.
The conundrum of the existence of matter is dealt with in the Torah/Teaching, from the very first word of the Torah – Berishith/In the Beginning – in the beginning of Creation. The Cabala expands this idea further by coining the phrase Yesh Maaiyin/Something From Nothing.
Cabala explains, Nothing is a relative term since God permeates everything everywhere. The physicality of the Earth is considered something when compared to the spirituality of the heavens; and that which comes from the the heavens is as if it came out of nothing.
First primordial matter is problematic – how did matter first appear? Cabala explains, Creation happened from the engraving into the hard light, called OreAinSof/LightWithoutEnd; 288 sparks fell into the abyss, – four times 72; the gematria of Chesed/Kindness is 72.
God created creation with kindness that filtered down through the attenuation of light into the bits and particles released as sparks comprising four levels: fire, gas, aquatic and earth, drawn out of the four spiritual worlds of: Action, Form, Creation and Close.
