Just 51 percent of Americans over the age of 18 are married, according to the Pew Research Center; that’s a six percent drop from 2000.
The Torah teaches, Marriage changes the sexual union; prior to marriage, the sex between couples, no matter the agreement or commitment, is temporal – there is no penalty in the union. Once married, adultery becomes a possibility, intensifying the sexual experience.
The social and legal penalty incurred by adultery in the Torah is severe, resulting in a meaningful commitment beyond what love inspires; modern day marriage has only a monetary and emotional expense for divorce – there is no actual punishment for adultery.
Many professions require marriage; and some marriages are of convenience – only those that have the sting of adultery essentially connected to the marriage get the sexual reward that comes from complete devotion. There is little reason in modern day society to marry.
The Cabala explains, The Jewish People are married to the Creator who gave as a wedding present the Ten Commandments beginning with, Do not serve other gods – anything other than the Creator of Heaven and Earth is other gods. Exile is divorce before reconciliation.
